UNITED STATES—In a dramatic escalation of military presence in Latin America, the Pentagon announced Friday that the U.S. is deploying the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and its strike group to the waters off South America. The move comes as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the tenth U.S. military strike on a suspected drug-running vessel, intensifying concerns over Washington’s broader strategic intentions in the region.1 2

Strategic Deployment and Mission Objectives
The USS Gerald R. Ford, currently stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, will join the U.S. Southern Command to “bolster U.S. capacity to detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit actors and activities that compromise the safety and prosperity of the United States,” according to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell.1 The carrier strike group includes five destroyers and nine squadrons of aircraft, potentially adding nearly 4,500 sailors to the more than 6,000 already deployed across eight warships in the region.2
This deployment marks a significant surge in U.S. military firepower in an area already witnessing increased naval activity, particularly near Venezuela and the Caribbean Sea. The Pentagon has emphasized that the operation is part of a broader campaign to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and combat narco-terrorism.3
Latest Strike Targets Venezuelan Gang
Hours before the deployment announcement, Secretary Hegseth revealed that the U.S. military conducted a nighttime strike on a vessel allegedly operated by the Tren de Aragua gang—a group originating in a Venezuelan prison and designated by the Trump administration as a foreign terrorist organization.14 The strike, carried out in international waters, killed six individuals and was the first of its kind conducted after dark.
“This is a message to narco-terrorists: Day or NIGHT, we will map your networks, track your people, hunt you down, and kill you,” Hegseth declared on social media.5

The latest operation brings the total death toll from U.S. strikes since early September to at least 43. The pace of these attacks has accelerated, with three strikes occurring this week alone. Recent operations have expanded into the eastern Pacific Ocean, targeting key drug trafficking routes used by cartels to smuggle cocaine.2 4
Regional Tensions and Speculation
The deployment and strikes have sparked speculation that the Trump administration may be preparing for more aggressive action against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who faces narcoterrorism charges in the U.S. On Thursday, the U.S. flew hypersonic bombers near Venezuela’s coast, further fueling concerns of regime change efforts.1 3
Maduro responded by praising Venezuelan security forces and civilian militias for conducting defense drills along the country’s 2,000-kilometer coastline. “Not war, not war, not war. Just peace, just peace, just peace,” he said in a televised address, appearing to mock U.S. intentions.1
Human Rights Concerns
International observers have raised alarms over the legality and transparency of the strikes. The United Nations has cautioned that lethal force is only permissible under international law when facing an imminent threat to life, warning that otherwise it could constitute a violation of the right to life.3
As the USS Gerald R. Ford makes its way toward South America, the region braces for further developments in what is shaping up to be one of the most assertive U.S. military campaigns in the Western Hemisphere in recent years.
