LANCASTER, CA—Lancaster, California is no longer just a desert town with aerospace roots—it’s now home to a professional soccer team with serious ambition. Meet AV Alta FC, the Antelope Valley’s first professional soccer club, kicking off its inaugural season in USL League One with a mix of grit, flair, and community pride.

A Stadium Reborn

The team plays at the newly renovated Lancaster Municipal Stadium, affectionately known as The Hangar. Once home to minor league baseball, the stadium has been transformed into a 5,300-seat soccer-specific venue, complete with a safe-standing supporters’ terrace and a desert-inspired design that reflects the region’s character.

Local Roots, Global Vision

Founded in 2023 and officially launched in 2025, AV Alta FC is the brainchild of John Smelzer, a sports industry veteran with ties to World Cup USA 1994 and FOX Sports. The club’s name—“Alta”—nods to the high desert and the legacy of Alta California, while its colors, Joshua Green and Desert Sand, pay homage to the local landscape.

Leadership & Talent

Head coach Brian Kleiban, known for his work with FC Barcelona’s academy and LAFC, brings a tactical edge to the squad. The team’s first signing, Miguel Ibarra, a former U.S. international and MLS standout, adds experience and star power to the roster.

Early Highlights

  • AV Alta FC made its competitive debut with a tough 2–0 loss to South Georgia Tormenta FC.

  • The team bounced back in style during its first home match, defeating Ventura County Fusion 3–1 in the U.S. Open Cup. Forward Jerry Desdunes etched his name in club history by scoring the first-ever goal at The Hangar.

More Than Just a Game

AV Alta FC isn’t just about wins and losses—it’s about building a soccer culture in a region that’s long been overlooked. With affordable ticket plans, youth outreach, and a passionate fan base, the club is quickly becoming a symbol of pride for Lancaster and the broader Antelope Valley.

As the season unfolds, one thing’s clear: AV Alta FC is here to stay, and they’re ready to make some noise in the desert.
