Los Angeles County Investigators Identify Cause of Deadly Eaton Fire

More than a year after the devastating Eaton Fire tore through Altadena and nearby communities, Los Angeles County fire investigators have officially concluded that the blaze was sparked by electrical equipment owned by Southern California Edison (SCE).

The Los Angeles County Fire Department released its long-awaited investigation Tuesday, determining that the January 7, 2025 fire began when electrical arcing occurred on an out-of-service Southern California Edison transmission tower. Investigators say the arcing produced hot molten material that fell into dry vegetation below, igniting what would become one of California's deadliest and most destructive wildfires.

The Eaton Fire claimed 19 lives, burned approximately 22 square miles, and destroyed or damaged more than 9,000 homes and businesses before firefighters fully contained it nearly a month later. Powerful Santa Ana winds, extremely low humidity, and critically dry vegetation fueled the fire's explosive spread across Altadena and surrounding foothill communities.

The report follows an 18-month investigation conducted by the Los Angeles County Arson Fire Investigation Unit in partnership with CAL FIRE. Officials said they reviewed physical evidence, electrical data, witness statements, and consulted electrical and metallurgical experts before reaching their conclusion.

Southern California Edison acknowledged Tuesday that it has received the report and is reviewing the findings. The utility previously stated it believed its equipment was likely associated with the fire's ignition and said it has taken its potential role seriously since the beginning of the investigation.

The official determination is expected to play a significant role in the numerous lawsuits already filed against Edison by homeowners, businesses, insurers, and government agencies seeking billions of dollars in damages related to the fire. Edison has also filed legal claims arguing that delayed evacuation notifications and water supply issues contributed to the disaster's severity.

The Eaton Fire was one of several catastrophic Southern California wildfires that erupted in January 2025 during an extreme Santa Ana wind event, becoming one of the state's most destructive wildfires on record.
