LANCASTER, CA—In a city where thorns, debris, and long stretches of road can take a toll on two wheels, one Lancaster bike shop has quietly become a go-to place for keeping riders moving.

Now in its third year at this location — and under current ownership for just over a year — the shop is owned and operated by Paul Avila, a longtime bike industry professional whose focus is simple: fix bikes the right way.

“I’ve been in the bike industry since 2019,” Avila said. “The shop itself has been here almost three years, but I bought it in August of 2024. Between myself and the team, we’ve got decades of experience working on just about every kind of bike you can imagine.”

Flat Tires Lead the List

The most common issue rolling through the doors? Flat tires — by far.

“Lancaster roads are tough on bikes,” Avila explained. “There are thorns, glass, wire — all kinds of debris. Flat tires are our number-one service, followed by shifting problems and general tune-ups.”

Many customers bring in bikes that haven’t been ridden in years, pulled from garages as cooler weather approaches. Instead of full restorations, the shop focuses on what Avila calls “refreshing” bikes — getting them safely back on the road with proper adjustments, new tubes, and preventative maintenance.

“Not everyone can afford a new bike,” Avila said. “But everyone deserves something safe and functional.”

To combat frequent flats, the shop offers heavy-duty foam tire inserts designed to protect tubes from punctures — a popular solution, especially for commuters and e-bike riders.

“We change flat tires every day,” he said. “Those inserts sell constantly because they work.”

E-Bikes Are Booming

E-bikes now make up a significant portion of both sales and service — and Avila says many riders don’t realize how complex they are until something goes wrong.

“They’re not like regular bikes,” he said. “Changing a flat on an e-bike on the side of the road isn’t realistic.”

With power cables, disc brakes, derailleurs, and heavier frames, e-bikes require specialized knowledge — and liability coverage many shops avoid. Avila’s shop doesn’t.

“We work on anything electric,” he said. “Other shops send customers to us because they don’t handle e-bikes. That’s where the industry is going.”

The shop’s top seller is a folding electric bike priced at around $659, popular with commuters, RV travelers, and customers without trucks or bike racks.

“They fold up and fit into SUVs, cars — even trunks,” Avila said. “Full-size e-bikes can break standard bike racks. We’ve seen it happen.”

The shop also works on older bikes, including decades-old models customers have owned since college.

Riders of All Ages

Avila says the customer base spans generations.

“We get everybody,” he said. “Students, commuters, retirees, RV travelers, mountain bikers, road riders — all of it.”

The shop also sells refurbished used bikes, offering affordable options for customers who need reliable transportation without a high price tag.

“Not everyone can afford a new bike,” Avila said. “But everyone deserves something safe and functional.”

What Sets the Shop Apart

When asked what truly differentiates the shop, Avila points to experience and thoroughness.

“Between the team, we’ve got around 40 to 50 years of combined experience,” he said. “And we know how to do the work right.”

That experience shows in services many shops don’t offer — including complete overhauls on high-end bikes.

“We’ll take a bike completely apart, service all the bearings, and rebuild it,” Avila explained. “If you don’t maintain a bike properly, it becomes very expensive later — just like skipping oil changes on a car.”

The shop also works on older bikes, including decades-old models customers have owned since college.

“You’ll see a modern carbon-fiber bike sitting next to an antique,” he said. “And we service both.”

Clear Communication and Community Focus

Before any work begins, customers receive a full evaluation outlining what needs attention, estimated costs, and turnaround time.

“No surprises,” Avila said. “We tell people exactly what we see and what we recommend.”

Like many small business owners, Avila works long hours to keep things running — often staying well past closing time to finish repairs. Despite that, community remains central to the shop’s mission.

“Whether it’s a scooter, an e-bike, a commuter bike, or something someone’s had for 30 years,” Avila said, “we want it leaving here safe and reliable.”
