It all came down to the wire—with time running out, Victor Valley’s defense stuffed the Antelope Valley squad right at the goal line, sealing a 34-28 win.

With just two seconds left, Lancaster’s QB Michael Marsenich tried to connect with Paraclete’s Adrian Jones in the end zone, but Oak Hills’ Junior Dennis laid a big hit, jarred the ball loose, and that was game over.

Dennis didn’t just come up big at the end—he made some big plays in the second quarter too, which earned him the game’s MVP honors.

After Antelope Valley went up 14-6 early in the second, Dennis took the kickoff and absolutely flew 99 yards to the house, bringing Victor Valley right back into it.

“I think it was 100 yards,” Dennis said. “I saw the hole and said ‘ain’t nobody catching me.’ I just saw the hole and I was gone.” 1

Not long after that, Dennis picked off a pass in the end zone. He had nothing but green grass in front of him, but ran out of steam and stepped out at the 31-yard line.

“Man, I was still gassed after that touchdown,” Dennis said. “I thought it was a pick-6. I was running down the sideline and the end zone just looked like it was getting further and further. I was like, ‘oh I’m getting tired and I had to step out.’”1

The game was full of incredible plays, beginning with an onside kick by Victor Valley on the opening kick off that was successfully recovered by Antelope Valley. Antelope Valley also managed a blocked punt and a blocked extra point.

The theme of the play was summed up well by the referee who, during the coin flip ceremony, spoke briefly with the players, letting them know , “For some of you, this may be your final game in your careers, but get out there and have fun, because that is what it is all about.”

In the end, while the AV crew did not prevail, they showed what a true talent they were, and proved why they were certainly all stars worthy of the recognition!
